Civil War: Company A and C, 11th Missouri Enrolled Militia Cavalry

Albert Keim was born in Prussia (Germany), the son of shoemaker August Keim. He immigrated to the United States and settled in Missouri, where he married (1) Fredericka Elizabeth Heiligenstein about 1854. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private and was mustered into Company A, 11th Missouri Enrolled Militia Cavalry, on March 1, 1862. Later he was transferred to Company C. Albert was mustered out when his regiment was consolidated with the 2nd Missouri State Militia Cavalry on September 2, 1862. After the war he relocated to Illinois. Albert married (2) Martha J. Sprinkle on April 5, 1881, according to the marriage certificate. This marriage must not have lasted long, as the family never mentioned it. Martha's descendants indicate she subsequently married Elisa "Ely" Chadwick, had a family and lived in the Peoria, Illinois, area. Neither family has been able to find a divorce record for Albert and Martha. On March 25, 1895, Albert filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Illinois and received application No. 1,165,382 (a certificate number for this filing was not found).
