Mary E. Downs, 61, New Bethlehem RD2, died Sunday, November 5, 1978, at the Brookville Hospital following a one week illness. She was born January 26, 1917, in New Bethlehem to the late William J. and Mary (Crissman) Kerr. On March 18, 1936, she married David R. Downs in New Bethlehem. She was a member of White Chapel Church in New Bethlehem, where she served as a trustee and Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also the Cancer Crusade chairman for many years in Porter Township, Clarion County. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, David Q. and Frederick L. both of Austintown, OH; four daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Marsha) McCauley, Mrs. Robert (Beulah) Wells, and Mrs. Rick (Lori) Rupp, all of New Bethlehem and Mrs. Donald (Mary Jane) Miller, Hermitage; two brothers, Verner Kerr, Rimersburg, and Quentin Kerr, Warren, OH; seven sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Olive) Barrett, Mrs. Ike (Ella) Varner and Mrs. Melvin (June) Thomas, all of New Bethlehem, Mrs. Guy (Lura) Cyphert, and Mrs. Francis (Evelyn) Ernest, both of Clarion, Mrs. Leon (Phoebe) Harold, Callensburg, and Mrs. Howard (Beulah) Bain of Meadville; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Two grandsons are deceased. Friends may call at the McNaughton Funeral Home, New Bethlehem from 7-9 Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m Tuesday. Services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ben Shindledecker, pastor of the White Chapel Church, New Bethlehem. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Burial Estates.
