According to Jesse and Solomon Vickers, Joseph was involved in the robbery at Newtown, PA on 22 Oct 1781. He reportedly harbored his sons Aaron and Moses, his nephew Abraham, his kinsmen the two Vickers boys, after the robbery. Joseph's brother Abraham was also charged with harboring the boys. The Vickers boys' confessions were made in 1782 and 1793, and Solomon was convicted of perjury. Joseph eventually was sentenced for harboring his family members who had participated in the robbery of the Public Treasury at Newtown. For his offense he was sentenced to have his hand burned and to spend 6 months in jail. In 1799 Joseph and Hester applied for a certificate to move to Canada where sons Joseph and Aaron were living. He died at Joseph Jr's home in Canada. His religious affiliation was Friends.
