JOHN G. HESS, retired manufacturer and founder of the Hess Carriage Works, died at his home, 236 East Antietam street yesterday morning at 11 o'clock from complications, following a long illness. He was 75 years of age.
Born in Carroll County, Maryland, Mr. Hess came to Hagerstown about thirty-three years ago from Westminster. The carriage works, bearing his name were established and managed by him until two years ago when he retired from active business.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, two sons: U. M. Hess, Maugansville road and Maurice E. Hess, this city; daughters, Mrs. L. S. Spangler, Hagerstown; Misses Lottie, Emma and Gertrude Hess, at home: sisters, Mrs. C. E. Slonaker, Baltimore; Mrs. Sarah Elder, Emmittsburg; Mrs. David Ebaugh, Frederick; Mrs. Catherine Fleagle, Hagerstown; Mrs. Clara Schweigert, York, Pa., and Mrs. Martin Myers, Thomasville, Pa. Sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Funeral services at the house on Saturday afternoon, at 3 o'clock by Rev. Dr. J. S. Simon. Interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.
