Willard Alva Sawyer, 84, of Ottawa, died Thursday morning April 29, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Funeral services will be at 11 am Monday at Mueller Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. John P. Meyers of First United Methodist Church officiating Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park with full military rites. Visitations will be from 3 to 5 pm Sunday.

Mr. Sawyer was born Oct. 21, 1914, in Urbana, Iowa, to Spencer Alva and Lela Fern (Ferguson) Sawyer. He married Josephine Belle Carter on Sept. 16, 1940 in Seattle, WA. She died April 12, 1998.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served on the U.S. S. Yakitat in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He and his wife owned Sawyer's Grocery Store in Estherville, Iowa and Florence Nightingale Day Nursery in Ottawa. He later worked for Caswell Farm Equipment and Directory Services in Ottawa.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church Kiwanis Golden K, Ottawa, VFW, American Legion Post No. 33 and Hardee's Breakfast Club.

He is survived by a daughter, Viki Luahn Sawyer Olsen of Ottawa, two granddaughters, Patricia JoAlva Olsen and Jennifer Jo Olsen, both of Ottawa; a sister Lela Belle Shirley of Estherville, and two brothers, Don (Lorene) of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and Beryl Verdae (Jan) of Blue Springs, Mo.

He was preceded in death by sister, Florine Sawyer and three brothers, Kalvin Pearl (Calvin Pearl), Carl (Harold Carl) and J. D. Sawyer.
