BABY KILLED CAR WRECKED

Three Months Old Child of Mrs. and Mrs. Alva Spencer of Polk Township Met Instant Death When Machine Turned Turtle. Others Escaped Injury

The three months old baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Spencer of Polk township was instantly killed Saturday night about 11 o'clock when the car in which Mrs. and Mrs. Sawyer and family were riding went into the ditch just west of the interurban station at Urbana, turning over and throwing the occupants from the vehicle. The baby's head was crushed and it was dead when picked up.

Mrs. and Mrs. Sawyer and children had been to Urbana to attend the ???? exercises at he church. At the close of the program they stayed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Ferguson, the former being a brother of Mrs. Sawyer, and visited there until near 11 o'clock, when they stared for their home.

Lighted by Lantern

The only light on the machine came fro a lantern which Mr. Ferguson had hung over the front of the car, the lights on the machine having failed to work. The accident happened between the depot and the Ferguson home, a distance of about a block. Mr. Ferguson knows of no reason for the machine leaving the road unless the light being poor he got too close to the edge. The incline there is quite steep and the ditch deep. The first he knew they were all dumped out on the ground and the car a wreck.

The ten year old son had one foot cut badly and Mrs. Sawyer and the other children escaped injury. The family was taken back to the Ferguson home and remained there for the night.

Funeral services for the baby were held Christmas morning form the Christian church at Urbana with Rev. Wilson officiating. Interment was in the Urbana cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer have the sincere sympathy of their friends in the sorrow which has come to them.
