James Thomas Ryan was born on Feb. 2, 1856 in West Union, Ohio to Arthur Ryan and Rachael Ann Mahaffey. He married Susan McClelland on Feb. 21, 1878 at West Union, Ohio.They had four children:
1. Elizabeth Ann Ryan born. Dec. 7, 1876 at Turkey Creek Adams County, Ohio. She married Andrew McNeilan. They lived in Seaman, Ohio. Elizabeth died in 1945.
2. Herbert McClelland Ryan born Dec. 10, 1881 at West Union, Ohio. He married Clara B. Jones. He died on May 31, 1955. They are both buried in Unity Cemetery.
3. Charles Thomas Rayn born Aug. 8, 1883 at Freeland Hollow, Adams County, Ohio. He married Eva Gladys McClelland. She is the daughter of William Anderson McClelland and Martha Bell Swisher. They have seven children. They are buried in the Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington, Ohio.
4. Mary Margaret Ruth Ryan born June 15, 1893 at West Union, Ohio. She married Elsworth Mattingly. They have five children.
James Thomas was a scholarly man having taught school in the area. He served as Oliver Township Clerk for five years (1908-1913). James Thomas owned and operated a general store business in Unity beginning in 1908. In 1912, he was elected Treasurer of Adams County on the Democratic ticket. During this time and until 1918 the store was leased.
In 1923, lightening struck the store and it was destroyed. A building on the property at the crossroad of Unity and Wheat Ridge used as a barn was converted to a store and the business continued to operate.
