John Edward Butcher
20 November 1928 ~ 18 January 2010

John Edward Butcher, 81, Indianapolis, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.

John was born on Nov. 20, 1928, in Bloomington, to General and Arda (Terrell) Butcher.

John was a graduate of University High School and worked for Rotrucks Restaurant in Bloomington, where he met and married the love of his life, Virginia Claire (Burns) Butcher, on her 18th birthday, June 8, 1947.

John and Virginia opened the Dinner Bell Restaurant in Bloomington in 1952. There they birthed and raised their two daughters, Christina Lynn and Julie Ann.

The couple moved to Kokomo in 1959, where they welcomed two young sons, Joseph Scott and Daniel Clay, into the family.

John and Virginia owned and operated a Western Auto store in Kokomo before becoming licensed real estate agents and opening Butcher Real Estate Agency.

After raising their eldest three children in Kokomo, John and Virginia devoted their lives to ministry, moving to Carthage, Mo., and attending Ozark Bible College. After his graduation, John was asked to lead many prominent churches in Missouri, including Lewisburg Christian Church, Lafountain Christian Church, North Miami Christian Church and West Side Christian. Many lives were touched through John's Christian leadership, touched by his humble testimony, his gentle spirit and his delightful and unexpected sense of humor.

John and Virginia then moved to Indianapolis where they re-established Butcher Real Estate Agency on East Washington Street and served the city by managing for H.U.D. and V.A. During this time, John attended Indiana Christian University, where he obtained his degree in theology. John used his Christian education every day in his professional life. He was a living example of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and he gave all he had physically, financially, and emotionally to mirror his Lord in his every endeavor. John reached out to touch the lives of people who would not have been touched otherwise, and this was his life's purpose.

John and Virginia retired from the real estate industry and closed their offices in 2004.

They are charter members of Crossroads Christian Church in Burlington, and they were also instrumental in the establishment of Middle Fork Community Christian Church.

John leaves his legacy of love to his wife, Virginia, his four children and their spouses, Christina Lynn Ripperger and Gary, Julie Ann Hufford and Brian, Joseph Scott Butcher and Debra and Daniel Clay Butcher and Theresa. He is also lovingly remembered by his 11 grandchildren, Cherise (Candlish) De Paz, Anthony Candlish, Trisha (Hufford) Miller, Matthew Hufford, Gillian (Butcher) Sharp, Adam Butcher, Kristin (Butcher) Parkevich, Caleb Butcher, Andrew Butcher, Kerstien Ford and Katrina Scagnoli; and his 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Harold Butcher, Wayne Butcher, Sharon, Shirley and Leah.

A celebration of John's life will be 2 p.m. Thursday Jan. 21, 2010, at Crossroads Christian Church, Burlington, with burial following in Burlington Cemetery.

A viewing for friends of the family will be 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 20, 2010, at Stout & Son Funeral Home Neptune Chapel, Burlington.

Memorial contributions and donations may be directed to Crossroads Christian Church in honor of John Edward Butcher.
