General Jackson George Washington Stephens was born on Dec. 8, 1874 near present day Isham in Scott Co., Tennessee. He was the son of Alvin Stephens (1840-1883) and Louisa Eldora Cordell (1844-1911).

Jackson's father, Alvin, was born in Whitley Co., Kentucky. He was the son of Whitmill Stephens (1809-abt 1866) and Elizabeth Waters (abt 1807-1871/80), both buried in the Stephens Family Cemetery in Scott Co., TN on land that was once part of their farm. Their markers (field stones) are now unreadable or are missing.

Jackson's mother, Louisa, was born in Cherokee Co., Georgia. She was the daughter of John Marion Cordell (1811-1899) and Mary Diadema Crain (1816-1876), both buried in the Cordell Cemetery in Pleasant Grove, Scott Co., TN.

Jackson, the given name he used, was the twin brother of George Washington Stephens. When his brother died on the day of their birth, his parents added his two given names (George Washington) to Jackson's, thus the four given names. This information came from Jackson's granddaughter, Rosie (Stephens) Sinkhorn (1936-2018).

Jackson married Dora Mae Spradlin (1881-1924) on Aug, 4, 1895 in Scott Co., TN at the age of 14. Dora was the daughter of Abner Wylie Spradlin (1858-1883) and Rachel Ann King (1854-1916). Rachel was the daughter of Dipen "Burel King (1826-1917) and Mary Margaret "Margie" Foster (1835-1884) and the maternal granddaughter of Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880) and Mary Rebecca "Polly/Becky" Cox (1800-1881).

Jackson and Dora where married for 29 years and had 12 known children. Five died in infancy (1902, 1904, 1909, 1913 and 1918). The surviving seven children were Ada Mae Stephens (1896-1974), Coffey Stephens (1899-1907), Edna Stephens (1903-1970), Hettie Stephens (1908-1980), Edward Jackson Stephens (1910-1996), Ernest Norman "Steve" Stephens (1916-1981) and Alsie Marie Stephens (1921-1962).

Jackson's first wife, Dora, died on Aug. 21, 1924 at the age of 43. It is thought that she died from childbirth complications. Dora is buried in the Stephens Family Cemetery located in Isham, Scott Co., TN. Isham is a small community that lies just across the KY/TN state line and not far from the little Kentucky community of Kingtown.

In June of 1930 , the widowed Jackson (55) married Gertrude "Gertie" Strunk (1894-1974), a woman about 20 years younger than he. Gertie, was also widowed, her first husband having been John L. Strunk (1876-1928). Jackson and Gertie were married for 29 years with no known children. She died in 1974 at the age of 80 in Oneida, Scott Co. TN. Gertie is buried in the Jones Cemetery in that county.

Jackson died on Sept. 2, 1959 in Oneida, Scott Co., TN at the age of 84. He is buried in the Stephens Family Cemetery in Isham, TN near his first wife, Dora.
