Ernest Norman "Steve" Stephens was born on Feb. 3, 1916 in the coal mining town of Wiborg, McCreary Co., Kentucky. He was the son of General Jackson George Washington Stephens (1874-1859) and Dora Mae Spradlin (1881-1924). Both of his parents are buried in the Stephens Cemetery located in Isham, Scott Co., Tennessee, just off Highway 27.

Steve's father, Jackson, was born near present day Isham, Scott Co., TN and died in Oneida, Scott Co., TN. Jackson's two addition given names (George Washington) was the result of his twin brother dying not long after birth and his parent's decision to give his given names to his surviving brother, General Jackson Stephens. Jackson's parents, Steve's paternal grandparents, were Alvin Stephens (1840-1883) and Louisa Eldora Cordell (1844-19911). Steve's great-grandparents were Whitmill Stephens (abt 1809-abt 1866) and Elizabeth Waters (abt 1807-bet 1871/80).

Steve's mother, Dora, was the daughter of Abner Wylie Spradlin (1858-1883) and Rachel Ann King (1854-1916). Steve's grandmother, Rachel, was the daughter of "Dipen" Burl King (1825-1917) and a granddaughter of Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880), the patriarch of the King family in McCreary Co. (then Whitley Co.), KY. He had moved his family from Campbell Co., Tennessee to the Marsh Creek area of lower Whitley Co., KY about 1819. The area is now part of McCreary County, created in 1912.

About 1932, Steve's sister, Ada Mae Stephens (1896-1974) and her husband, Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Cooper (1892-1951), moved their family from Scott Co., TN to Parksville, Boyle Co., KY, where they eventually settled on a farm located on Tennessee Ridge. Ada's brother, William Whitmill Stephens (1869-1956), had moved his family to Boyle County about 1912 and eventually lived just down the road from her brother.

Not long after his sister, Ada, moved to Parksville, Steve also left Scott Co., TN and came to live with Ada and her husband, Ben. There he met his future wife, Elsie King, whose family also lived on Tennessee Ridge.

Elsie was the daughter of Thomas Letcher "Tom" King (1881-1973) and Minna Susan "Minnie" Gooch (1883-1971). Tom, at the urging of his friend and cousin, William Whitmill Stephens, had moved his family to the Parksville area from Kingtown, McCreary Co., KY in 1916. Elsie was born there, in a hollow just off Tennessee Ridge Road on Aug. 13, 1917, the eighth of their ten known children.

On Easter Sunday, April 21, 1935, Steve married Elsie King at her home on Tennessee Ridge. Steve was 19, Elsie 17. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Jim Edwards (1860-1946). A picture of the wedding party was taken after the wedding in the King's front yard. They lived with her parents for several years.

Around 1941-42, Steve received technical training in Lexington, Fayette Co., KY in order to become a welder as a part of the WWII effort. In 1942, he moved his family to Chester, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania to work in the shipyards building ships for the Navy. His older brother, Edward Jackson Stephens (1910-1996), and his wife's brothers, Luther Ray King (1907-2000) and Oscar Elvy King (1910-2003), also trained as welders and moved their families to Chester, PA about the same time.

After the war Steve stayed in Pennsylvania, as did his wife's brothers, Luther and Oscar. Steve's older brother, Edward "Ed" Stephens, moved back to Boyle Co., KY and eventually purchased a farm near Junction City, KY.

Steve and Elsie were married for 46 years and had four children. They were Geneva Iris Stephens (1936-2003), Marcello Cleo "Marcie" Stephens (1939- ), Duane Thomas Stephens (1943-2015 ) and Ronald Ernest "Ronnie" Stephens (1945- ). Geneva and Marcie were born in Parksville, Ky, Dewayne and Ronnie in Chester, PA.

Steve died on July 14, 1981, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA ,at the age of 65. He had been struggling with a heart problem for some time. He is buried in the Lawn Croft Cemetery located in Linwood, Chester Co., PA.

Steve's wife, Elsie, did not remarry. She died on April 10, 2001 in Oxford, Chester Co., PA at the age of 83. She too, is buried in Lawn Croft Cemetery, next to her beloved husband, Steve.
