Mary Etta Stephens was born on Mar. 4, 1877 near present day Isham in Scott Co., Tennessee. She was the daughter of Alvin Stephens (1840-1883) and Louisa Eldora Cordell (1844-1911), the seventh of their nine known children.

Mary died on Jan. 7, 1894 in Scott County at the age of 16, the result of TB. Her father had come home from the Civil War with the dreaded disease about 1863. Her mother and five of her siblings children also caught TB. Mary was buried on the family farm in the Stephens Family Cemetery near the community of Isham, with just a field stone for a marker.

Unfortunately, that stone, along with several other field stone burial markers, was inadvertently removed many years later during a much needed cemetery clean up. Her parents are also buried in this cemetery.
