POOLER -- Samuel Carne Elkins, 66, died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah after a short illness.
The Pooler native retired as an aircraft maintenance superintendent with the 165th Tactical Airlift Group of the Georgia Air National Guard. He was one of the original members of the group, which formerly was the 158th Fighter Squadron. He was church historian, Median Men's Sunday school class teacher and a deacon at First Baptist Church in Pooler. He was a past president of the Savannah Association of Flying Air National Guardsmen and a former alderman and city administrator in Pooler. He was a former member of the city planning commission and former editor and publisher of the Westside Citizen.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty M. Elkins of Pooler; two daughters, Mrs. Shirley E. Rash of Orlando, Fla., and Ms. Diane Elkins of Pooler; a son William D. Elkins of Pooler; his mother, Mrs. Thelma L. Elkins of Pooler; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia E. Letchworth of Savannah and Mrs. Ann E. Newham of Pooler; a brother, Bennett H. Elkins, Jr. of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Pooler, burial in Westside Memorial Gardens in Bloomingdale.

Smith Glenn Smith, Tommie White, C. B. Masters, Travis Nichols, Richard Dotson and Clyde Watson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Carlos Tan, Deacons of First Baptist Church, Members of the Median Men's Sunday School Class and Members of the 165th Tactical Air Lift Group of the GA Air National Guard,.
Burial will be in Westside Memorial Gardens in Bloomingdale with Military Honors. Remembrances to Building Fund of the First Baptist Church of Pooler. Terry C. Massey Funeral Home in charge.
