Samuel served in Company G, 18th Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Samuel enlisted as a Private on 7 July 1862 at the age of 25. He enlisted in Company G, 18th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 6 Aug 1862. He received a disability discharge from Company G, 18th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 19 Feb 1863 at Springfield, MO.

Samuel S. Petty was born February 28, 1837 in Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. From there he moved to Indiana at the age of 2 years and from there to Iowa in 1855.

He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah E. Littell on January 21, 1862 who survives him. To this union were born seven children, one dying in infancy. The living are Annie Hegwood of Walnut Grove, Minn; John, of Butler, Okla.; May Hegwood of Monroe, Iowa; Nellie Newell of Beaver Crossing, Nebr.; Edward, address not known; Martha Sanders of Cordova, Iowa; also twenty-seven grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren are left to mourn his departure.

He enlisted in the United States service in Co. G 18th Iowa in 1862. He united with the Baptist church in Monroe in 1865.

Departed this life Nov. 5, 1917, at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 5 days.

He had been ailing in health for the past four years, being bedfast for the past four months. He bore his sickness without a murmur.

The funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 7th at 10 o'clock at the residence at Percy, Alex Waddle having charge of the services. Burial was made in the Dunreath cemetery.

The family wish to thank the friends and neighbors for the kindness in the sickness and death of a husband and father.
