James Howard Petty was a Private in the 51st Regiment, Illinois Infantry, Company E.
He registered for the draft on 1 July 1863 at the age of 29, enlisted on Sept. 26, 1864 and was discharged on 7 Feb 1865.
His discharge was a result of an injury on November 29, 1864 at the battle of Spring Hill, Tennessee. He received a gunshot wound to his right hand and originally received a one fourth disability which entitled him to a pension of $2 a month, eventually increased to $4 when his disability was rated as one half in 1876.

Married Elizabeth Stalcup/Stallcup on 25 Oct 1857 in Clay County, Indiana. Five children:

Married Sarah A. Anderson (nee Rariden) on 29 Jan 1874 in Edgar County, Illinois. One Child:

According to Clay County Death Records, Sarah died on 22 Dec. 1881 in Carbon, Clay, Indiana. Burial unknown. Born about 1846, she was most likely the daughter of Aquila Rariden and Ruth Ann Cope.
