Esther Barber was born on 29 Jul 1846 in Lawford, Essex, England. She was the eighth of eleven children born to John and Jemima (Clark) Barber. John was a wheelwright and carpenter while Jemima was an upholsterer.

The May 1853 death of Esther's father, John Barber, appears to have placed financial hardship on the family as the estate was valued at less than £100.

The 1861 census shows fourteen-year-old Esther working as a servant in Harrow.

In the 1871 census, Esther is a Barmaid at the Stanley Arms pub on Jamaica Level in Rotherhithe, London. The publican, Jonas Clark, was the brother of Esther's mother. The Stanley Arms is only a few blocks from the Jolly Gardeners pub on Rotherhithe New Road, the home of the Debnam family.

On 1 September 1872, Esther and Robert Debnam were married at St. Mary's in Lawford. Esther's mother and Uncle Jonas acted as witnesses.

The couple settled into a cottage at #2 Corbett's Lane, just around the corner from the Jolly Gardeners. This is where they welcomed their first five children: Algar Esther (1873-1948), Florence Edith (1877-1952), Susan Jemima "Mimey" (1878-1976), Walter Robert (1880-1882), and Agnes Emily "Emmie" (1882-1953).

On 3 March 1883 the family set sail from London on board the Scotland. They arrived in Quebec on 7 May. The family proceeded to Winnipeg, Manitoba where the family grew when George Robert (1885-1944) and Lottie Hannah (1887-1888) were born.

On 1 October 1889 Esther died of complications from a stillbirth that had occurred on 23 September. Esther was buried 1 October at Winnipeg's Brookside Cemetery in section O, lot 482, which she shares with daughter, Lottie Hannah, and the stillborn infant.
