Son of William Thomas "Buck" Lawrence and Sarah Amanda "Nettie Jeffery. He was given the middle name of Garland after his mother's uncle, Garland Forest Jeffery who received the Army's Distinguished Service Cross during World War I.

First wife was Krata "Kay" Marie Young and they divorced in Stockton, California in July 1969 after 33 years of marriage. He and Krata had the following children together:
Ruth Laverne, Harold Douglas and Barbara Jean.

2nd wife was Violet Torres. No children were born to this union.

Harry Garland Lawrence, 78, of Stockton died Sunday in a Stockton Hospital.
Born in Arkansas, Mr. Lawrence was a Stockton resident for 52 years. He retired after 10 years as a welder for Panella Trucking Co. He was a member of the American Legion Karl Ross Post, the American Association of Retired Persons and (the) First Baptist Church. He was a past member of The Good News Quartet, which was the first group to sing gospel songs on KSTN Radio.
Survivors: wife Violet Lawrence of Stockton; children Ruth Lawrence Lyon of Nevada, Barbara Lawson of Hickman, Harold Lawrence and Maria Torres, both of Stockton, and Lisa O'Brien of Spokane, Wash.; siblings Harlin Lawrence of Stockton and Glen(n) Lawrence of Tulsa, Okla.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, DeYoung Memorial Chapel, 601 N. California St. Visitation : 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial: San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial: Assistance League of Stockton, 1323 E. Harding Way, Stockton, CA 95205."

Harry served in the US Army at the end of WWII in the Medical Department and was stationed briefly in the Philippines. He was the recipient of the Army Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
