DEATH CALLS EARLY RESIDENT
Elizabeth Rollins Johnson, 83, widow of Joseph T. Johnson, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Howell Slater, 532 Thirteenth Sunday after a six weeks' illness.
She was born in Ogden Sept.12, 1854, the youngest child of David Rollins and Mary Ann Sharratt. Her parents were pioneers of 1853, building their first home of logs and willows at the south and east end of the sand mound just below Washington on Twelfth. Her father moved his family when Elizabeth was three years old to their new home, situated where the D. & R.G.W. freight depot now stands. This house was one of the first in Ogden to use glass and sawed lumber.
Elizabeth Rollins and Joseph T. Johnson were married in the L.D.S. Endowment house, Salt Lake City, June 23, 1873. Mr. Johnson was a prominent builder and contractor of early Ogden. He preceded her in death in October 1934. She was one of the earliest milliners in Ogden, at the time when this industry was carried on by the L.D.S. Relief Society, and when practically all materials were home made. She was a faithful Latter-day Saint, being a member of the Relief society and the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
She is survived by the following children: Dr. David R. Johnson and Frank D. Johnson of Twin Falls, Idaho; Mrs. Howell Slater and Dr. Clarence B. Johnson of Ogden; George H. Johnson of Burley, Ida., and Howard R. Johnson of Pocatello, Idaho, and Mrs. K. J. Hawkins, of Salt Lake City. Thirty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at one o'clock in the L.D.S. Seventh ward chapel by Bishop Alvert E. Read. Relatives and friends may call at the home of Mrs. Howell Slater, Tuesday afternoon and evening, and Wednesday until time of services. Burial will be in Ogden City cemetery under direction of Lindquist & Sons.
