Son of James Carter (born ca 1824 died 9 April 1867 in Polk County, GA) & Margaret Jane HOPKINS Carter (born 1827 died 25 December 1873 in Polk County, GA).
There is a question about what the "H" stands for in John H.'s name - some say it is Henry and some say it is Hopkins (which was his mother's maiden name)
John H. Carter and Margaret Carolina Self married on November 1, 1866, in Georgia.
Madison County Record, April 29, 1926:
OBITUARY: John H. Carter was born January 11, 1848, in Georgia, and died April 21, 1926, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Mullins near Wharton. His remains were interred in the Fritts Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by W. A. Easterling. Mr. Carter was married to Margarett Self November 1, 1866, after his return from service as a Union soldier in the Civil War. Five or ten years later they moved to Arkansas and resided here the balance of their lives, the latter dying just a few years ago. Five children survive them, viz: Mrs. Mullins, Mrs. Zona Goucher of Huntsville, Borden Carter, Tom Carter and Mrs. Lillie Russell all of Loy.
MILITARY:
Although his obituary says he was a Union soldier, family stories have always said he fought for the Confederacy.
