Joseph Martin Beyer was born in the old Beyer Homestead near Smicksburg,a son of Samuel & Caroline Feltwell Beyer.
He graduated from the Dayton Academy and Mount Union College.
He was the principle of the Apollo & Rural Valley public schools and taught penmanship.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard and served during the railroad riots in Pittsburgh.

He was married on 4 October 1877 to Miss Jennie Eckman at her home in Dayton. Three years later they moved to Punxsutawney where he established the Beyer Drug Store in the Brennan Building and later he moved the store to the Pantall Building after it was constructed,on Mahoning Street.

He was known as "Uncle Joe",he loved fishing and took many trips to Potter and other northern Pennsylvania counties for Trout fishing.He was well known by the natives along Kettle Creek.

He was a Charter member of the local Elks Lodge and of the Corn Cob Club;and was elected the club President.
He was at one time,the Chief of the J.A.Weber Fire Department in Punxsutawney.And he was a member of the First M.E. Church.

He was survived by his widow and the following children:
Mrs. W.B.(Mabel) Hampson of Washington D.C.;
Mrs. H.R.[Caroline]Young of Warren,Pa.;
Dr.J.Walter Beyer and
Mrs. Emma [William E.] Gordon of Tulsa,Oklahoma;
Mrs. Lee S.[Bess] North and
Fred W.Beyer of Punxs'y;
Mrs. J.B.[June] Flenniken of Pittsburgh;
One brother,J.Harvey Beyer of Punxs'y;
Two sisters,Mrs. Martha J. Davis and
Miss Caroline Beyer of Oakland,California;
Two half brothers,Rev. Frank Neigh of New Castle;
and William Neigh of Little Valley New York;
17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren
also survive him.
Another brother,Dr. W.F. Beyer died three years
ago at the age of 84.
