William "Henry" was the son of Charles Mitchel and Sally Gettys Burgin. He married Hettie Sue Freeman on Apr. 25, 1920 in Rutheford County, North Carolina. Their marriage produced five daughters (Versie, Dorothy, Frances, Bernice, and Helen) and one son (JC). They divorced prior to him enlisting in the United States Army during World War II on Jul. 27, 1942 at Fort Jackson in South Carolina.

Presumably honorably discharged from service, he almost immediately developed problems re-entering civilian life. He may have suffered from what today is termed post-traumatic stress disorder.

In the autumn of 1945, his brothers, Frank and Burnice, had to physically remove him from Rutherford County, North Carolina, to an Armed Services psychiatric facility in Georgia. He was discharged later that year, but whatever treatments he received were ostensibly inadequate. Still suffering from the hell of war, he died from a self inflicted gunshot wound in his parents' home in December 1945.

***Note: During the 1900 Federal Census enumerated on Jun. 23, 1900, he was listed as an eight month old son (birthdate of Sep. 1899) in the household of his parents, Charles and Sallie Burgin. His birthdate is given as Sep. 28, 1899 on his NC death certificate, as 1900 on his World War II enlistment records and the NC Death Index, and as Sep. 28, 1900 on his military footstone.
