Son of Dr. Elizur and Abigail (Hollister) Hale, he married Ruth Stevens, 21 May 1786, Glastonbury, CT. Four possibly five children: Charlotte, Frederick, Andrew, Albert and possibly Matthew.

He served in the Revolutionary war in Capt Elijah Wright's Company, Col, Enos's Regt.
