Son of Matthew and Ruth (Stevens) Hale of Glastonbury, CT. Graduated Yale in 1827. Became an agent of the American Tract Socity, spending 2 years in South Carolina, Florida and Georgia, part of the time in Sunday school work among the "Sand hills" of Georgia. He returned to Yale, was licensed and ordained to preach in 1830 by the New Haven Association East - Congregational. Preached in the vicinity of Boston, making his home with Rev. Lyman Beecher.

In fall 1831, as a member of the "Illinois Band" or "Yale Band of Illinois", a missionary band of Yale Divinity School, went west to Illinois landing at Shawneetown, Nov. 15, 1831. (This band of thirteen founded numerous Illinois educational institutions and a constituency of churches.) He took charge of the Bethel Church in Bond county, Illinois in Jan. 1832 and lived there for eight years with the last two years primarily spent visiting new settlements through the midwest to preach and aid in forming churchs.

For 27 years, pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church, Springfield, Ill from Nov 1839 to Jan 1867. Chaplin in the Illinois State Legislature, Minister to President Abraham Lincoln and officiated at his funeral in Springfield, Ill.

Married April 1839 at Monticello, Madison County, Illinois to Abiah Chapin, a teacher at Monticello Academy, at Godfrey, Ill. Three children: Catharine, Sophia and Albert F.

Affectionly referred to as "Father Hale" . After his retirement, citizens of Springfield subscribed a fund for his salary "to do general and necessary work among the down and out of the city", from which he became known also as "Pastor of the Highways and Hedges"
