Olaus Hvinden was born in Vestre Gran, Hadeland, Norway on 29 Jan 1866 to parents Hans and Agnette Olson. He was baptized by Rev. Didakson and confirmed in the Vestre Gran Church by the same pastor. He immigrated to America in the fall of 1886 and came to Hickson, ND to the Engret Gilbertson home. His sister, Mrs. J. M. J. Ness of Maddock also came from Norway at the same time. In 1888 he homesteaded in Wells County, ND and he was one of the early pioneers of this community. In the fall of 1900 he made a trip to Norway and returned in Jul of 1901. He was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Olson also from the same place in Norway on 19 Jul 1902 at the Albert Liudahl farm. Rev. Ivar Oksendahl officiated. To this union four children were born. Harold, who died at the age of two years, Henry who died in infancy, Olaf of Stanford, CO and Haldor of Maddock. He made his home in the Viking community until 1925 when he moved to Hamberg where he was janitor in the church and school for several years. He was a mail carrier at Hamberg until he became ill. He was taken ill on 5 May 1941 and taken to the Maddock Hospital, later to the Rugby hospital where he underwent a major operation. He was well on the road to recovery and a sudden change came and he passed away at 11:00 p.m. 3 Jun 1941. He was 75 years, 4 months and 4 days old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Olaf of Stanford, CO and Haldor of Maddock; three sisters, Mrs. J. M. J. Ness, Mrs. Gust Nelson and Lena Hvinden all of Maddock; one brother Christian Hvinden and one half brother Andrew Hvinden also of rural Maddock. Two brothers have preceded him in death, Iver Hvinden of Flora, ND who passed away in the fall of 1940 and another brother, Hans, who died in Norway. Funeral services were conducted from the Viking Lutheran Church on Monday, 9 Jun 1941 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. G. R. Estrem officiated. Miss Ileen Haug of Hamberg rendered a vocal solo and a ladies trio of Myrtle Kittelson, Ileen Haug and Dorothy Scheer also from Hamberg sang a song. Honorary pallbearers at the funeral T. P. Lommen, M. A. Wisness, Andrew Elken, Olaf Kleven, Matt Haug and Claus Bergrud and active pallbearers were six nephews, Herman Hvinden, Oscar Hvinden, Elmer Hvinden, Henry Liudahl, Theodore Liudahl and Oliver Hvinden. Interment was made in the cemetery. Block 3 Plot 24.
