Marie Mrs. Gust Nelson, long time resident of Benson County, passed away at the Maddock Memorial Hospital on the morning of November 29th. For the last three years she has been in failing health, having been confined to her bed with a back ailment. Friends and callers will always remember her cheerful disposition which was a real comfort and joy for those who cared for her. At the time of death she had attained the age of 84 years and nine months. Marie Hvinden Nelson was born on 29 Feb 1869 at Gran, Hadeland, Norway and came to the United States in 1889 arriving in Benson County in 1893. She filed on a homestead in 1898 living there five years before she was married to Gust Nelson. She continued to live on her homestead until her death. One of the vivid recollections of the early days was the laying of the railroad on the N. P. tracks which bisected her homestead. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson were married on the A. A. Liudahl farm in Viking, ND on 19 Nov 1903. Her husband preceded her in death seven years ago. To this union were born three children, with one having died at birth. Two daughters are living, Mrs. Alma Ellefson on the home place and Olga Mrs. Gerhard Arne at Gig Harbor, WA. Other survivors are Miss Lena Hvinden, her twin sister, Christian Hvinden her brother and six grand children. Mrs. Nelson was a member of the North Viking Lutheran Church and the North Viking Ladies Aid. She will be remembered for her strong faith and her love for the old Norwegian hymns, which she sang as she lay upon the bed, some times far into the night. May the Lord bless her memory. Funeral services were held at the North Viking Lutheran Church on Wednesday December 2nd with Rev. Frithjof Olderr officiating. William Raaen sang two Norwegian numbers, "Den Store Hvide Flok" and "Zion's Vegter Never Rosten". Pallbearers were Henry Liudahl, Theodore Liudahl, Herman Hvinden, Oscar Hvinden, Harry Hvinden and Turner Sorlie. Honorary pallbearers were Christ Madsen, Tom Sabbe, N. O. Halvorson, Hans Ellingson, Ben Guskjolen and Herman Hermanson.
