John was the son of John and Margaret (Cloyd) Speer. He was very likely born in Augusta Co VA, or at least one of the counties formed from Old Augusta, where he parents lived before they moved to Burke Co NC. He married Mary Barbary Grove, 1805-1806 in Burke Co, and they removed to Jefferson Co KY in 1810 or 1811, settling in the part that would later become Oldham Co. He was a blacksmith and a farmer, with various other business interests. He and Mary were buried in the old Speer Family Cemetery, which is now part of Floydsburg Cemetery. Children, other than those with links listed below, were:
