Charlie Smith was known as Charlie Blue Britches. He lived in a small house near the Cove School/Cove Cemetery opposite the school on the creek.

William Charlie Smith, 90, Star Route 30, Pettigrew, died Nov. 2, 1984 at the Huntsville Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 23, 1894 at Pettigrew, the son of John and Abbie Burnett Smith. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dona Silvis Smith of the home, three sons, Johnnie Smith of Springdale, Roy Smith of Pettigrew and Wayne Smith of Fayetteville, one daughter, Mrs. Lora Rowland of Fresno, CA, one sister, Mrs. Alpha Barker of Westville, OK; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 5, in the chapel of Brashears Funeral Home with the Rev. Laybon Porter officiating. Burial was in Cove Cemetery under the direction of Brashears Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Larry Smith, Ricky Smith, Donnie Smith, Randall Smith, Afton Smith and Darrel Smith.
