Sudden Death
. A very old Woodville resident, in the person of Mr Henry Hawken, died with painful suddenness early yesterday morning. He was staying with his son-in-law, Mr Levi Hambling and did not feel well on Monday. Various remedies to give him relief were tried and when Mr Hambling retired at 10 o'clock the old gentleman was sitting in a chair in his bedroom and said he did not require further attention as he felt very much better. Before Mr Harold Hambling retired at 11 o'clock he found his grandfather in bed and sleeping comfortably. Mr Hambling got up at 5 o'clock yesterday morning and found Mr Hawken lying dead on the bath-room floor. He must have been dead for some hours for the body was nearly cold. The deceased was in his 78th year.
The late Mr Hawken was amongst the first settlers to arrive in the district. He secured the farm (then standing bush) on the Woodville road at present occupied by Mr Hartstone and where he resided for six years. This was the year 1877. After felling a portion of the bush and getting the farm into something like order, he sold it and then came into Woodville to live. He opened the first blacksmith's shop in the town. He was a very handy man with tools and no job of any kind ever went past him. As a veterinary surgeon he was invaluable to the district in those primitive days and many a settler's horse and cow had he successfully treated. Mr Hawken knew something of human anatomy as well and could draw a tooth as scientifically as any dentist.
His was a very kindly disposition and he was liked by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.
He was a great lover of flowers and all his spare moments were spent in attending to them. The Horticultural Society loses a valued member. He also took a great interest in local affairs and when Woodville was declared a borough was elected on the first council.
The deceased leaves a son and two daughters - Mr E. Hawken who lives at Rangitaua (on the Main Trunk line), Mrs L. Hambling and Mrs F. Holder.
The funeral is arranged for tomorrow at 2.30

HAWKEN - Died, at the home of his son in-law, Mr Hambling, Woodville, New Zealand, on February 11, 1913, our dear brother, Henry Hawken, of heart failure. Brother Hawken was born at Michaelstow, Cornwall, England, on November 1, 1835 and was thus in his seventy-eighth year at the time of his death. When twenty-three years old he came to New Zealand. From his early days, our brother had walked in the Christian path and it was with delight that he, with his two daughters, Sisters Hambling and Holder, some nine years ago accepted God's message for to-day, under the labours of Pastor W. H. Pascoe. Up to his decease, Brother Hawken was leader of the 'Woodville Church and his greatest joy was found in passing on to others the good news of the blessed hope. A few days before his death, he completed the learning of the 119th Psalm. This Psalm of 176 verses he repeated to his little granddaughter. The Word of God was his delight. His faith was strong in his soon coming Redeemer. A large gathering of relatives and friends was present at the graveside. Words of comfort were spoken from Ps. 116: 15 ; Titus 2 : 11-13 ; and 1 Thess. 4 : 13-18. May the Lord's comfort be the portion of the bereaved ones. A. H. WHITE.
