HAWKEN - At her residence, Ormond Street, Woodville, on Wednesday, 24th November, Eliza, the beloved wife of Henry Hawken; aged 69 years.
OBITUARY Mrs H. HAWKEN; aged 69 years
On Wednesday evening, Mrs Henry Hawken, who has been ailing for hte last four months, died at her residence in Ormond Street. The deceased was one of Woodville's oldest residents and was beloved by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. Mr Henry Hawken and his wife and family came to the district was standing bush. Mr Hawken was one of the original members of the Small Farm Association, the first association of the kind that was established to settle this district. His section was on the Woodlands Road, near the foot of Wharite and many a weary day was spent on it clearing the heavy bush. Mr Hawken's success as a farmer was in a great measure due to the management and care of his wife. The family remained on the farm about ten years, when Mr Hawken sold out to the late Mr John Cameron and started business in Woodville as a general blacksmith, from which he retired about ten years ago. The old couple have been living a retired and comfortable life ever since, their greatest joy and care being their flower garden. The funeral was held to-day and was largely attended.
