After his father's death in 1867 James was raised by his Uncle James TYLER. In 1870 he was living with the James TYLER family in Perry Township, Noble County, IN. He moved to a farm east of New Paris IN sometime before 1900, and lived the rest of his life in that area, the last 27 years on the same farm, three miles east of New Paris.

James married Miss Lauretta Mills in 1882. Lauretta died from consumption in 1892. Widowed, he married Miss Anise Hapner in 1894.

He had been in failing health for several months, and bedfast for two weeks before dying from generalized arteriosclerosis and gangrene of the foot. Survived by 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
