Born in a log farmhouse, Ethel was raised on a farm and learned farm chores as well as housework, cooking and canning duties inside the home. She taught herself to sew. Ethel only attended school through the 8th grade, then did housework for local families. In 1921 she moved from Goshen IN to Chicago IL, and to Maywood IL in 1923. During that time she worked at Carson, Pirie Scott Company, a department store in the Chicago Loop. In 1927 Ethel moved back to Goshen IN, where she lived the remainder of her life. She was a homemaker, her primary interest being her family, although she was active in some social organizations. After Dolph's retirement she spent her winters at Lake Worth FL, but was always happiest at home in Goshen. She died from a cerebral hemorrhage and arteriosclerotic heart disease.
