Mrs. Clara Luper Gray Passes
For the first time since his happy home was established 29 years ago, the family circle of W. W. Gray has been broken. Death entered that home in the early morning hours Tuesday and claimed his beloved wife, Mrs. Clara Luper Gray.
Mrs. Gray had been in failing health for a year or two, her strength having been steadily depleted by a heart ailment. Everything humanly possible was done to restore her health, but to no avail. She had been confined to her bed for several weeks following a period of hospitalization, and though no hope was held for her recovery, loved ones and friends were still unprepared for her death.
Everybody for miles around knew Clara, but none was ever heard to speak aught but good of her and her life. Her genial manner, her happy and effervescent disposition and her genuine love for people won and held for her friends by the score, and made her a favorite in any circle. She always scattered sunshine and good will wherever she went.
Mrs. Gray had been keenly interested and active in civic, educational and religious circles until ill health forced her to reluctantly give up these things. She served for many years as pianist at the Prentiss Methodist Church of which she was a loyal and consecrated member, and shed tears of deep regret when she was forced to write her resignation because of her depleted strength and enforced inactivity. She had served most efficiently as president of the Prentiss Woman's Club, accepting this place of service and honor when the club was in its infancy, being its third president; she served as president of the local Women's Society of Christian Service and also as chairman of the Northeastern Zone of the W. S. C. S.; served for years as organist of the Prentiss Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and also as Worthy Matron, and in many other places of honor and service. Her hands scorned idleness, and it was the hardest thing she ever had to do to obey the doctor's orders of complete rest and relaxation in her last days.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Prentiss Methodist Church, with her pastor, Rev. G. Eliot Jones officiating. Pall bearers, honorary and active, were the stewards of the Prentiss Methodist Church. Interment was made in the Prentiss Cemetery, with Aultman-Saulters Funeral Home in charge.
She is survived by her husband, W. W. Gray; one daughter, Mrs. Carrol Williams; one sister, Miss Bessie Luper; and five brothers, O. C. Luper, Grover Luper, Charlie Luper and Clarence Luper, all of Prentiss, and Dr. J. C. Luper of Okolona.
