Alfred Tompkins was born February 22, 1807 in Tennessee. He moved with his parents to Illinois.

Alfred Tompkins and Nancy Jane C. Mc Caslin were married on February 9, 1837 in Putnam County, Illinois.

He moved with some of his siblings to Texas and was listed on the Burleston County, Texas 1850 census.

Alfred passed away on August 5, 1852, in Texas and was buried there at the Cole Cemetery, in Lee County, Texas.

Alfred's widowed wife, Nancy Jane C.(Mc Caslin), and her seven children moved back to Bureau County Illinois after his death. Alfred's brother Martin Tompkins paid for their return trip, and they lived with Martin and his family. Around Oct. or Nov. 1853, Alfred's youngest child, the only boy, Alfred Tompkins Jr. died. Then in January 1854, Nancy Jane C.(Mc Caslin) passed away. Martin Tompkins became the guardian of Alfred & Nancy's children and raised them as his own.
