Many genealogists say Elizabeth (Owens) Tompkins was the daughter of Thomas Owens, he was b.about 1763 d.1836 and his wife Elizabeth ?????. Thomas Owens was the son of William Owen II b.about 1725 Virginia d.1788 in Wilkes Co. North Carolina and his wife Elizabeth ???. I haven't seen any proof of this.
Champaign County was organized in 1833, having been previously a part of Vermillion County, Illinois.
Many genealogists have said Elizabeth (Owens) Tompkins died in 1833 in Champaign Co. Ill. but I haven't seen any proof of this. She was in the 1830 census in Vermillion Co. Ill. with her husband and family but there was no account of her after that. Sept 5, 1836 her husband's estate was settled, and she was not living at that time.
Elizabeth's burial information is unknown, but if she died in Champaign County, Ill. she may have been buried in Harvey Cemetery, in Champaign County, Illinois, in an unmarked grave, or in Leal Park, in Urbana, Ill. Leal Park is a remnant of the Big Grove, where the early pioneers settled. It is a former Native American and pioneer burial ground, with unmarked graves.
It is believed that Elizabeth Owens and William Tompkins were married about 1796 or 1797 in Carter Co. Tenn.
If anyone has proof of any the above information, please let me know.
Thanks, Jan
