George Coutts was the son of George & Helen Dickson Coutts of Scotland. He was born in Carrington, West Linton, Scotland. After coming to America, he settled in Luzerne Co., PA. He had two brothers, Robert & Charles Mason and a sister Jessie Janet who continued on to Washington State.

George married Agnes Westwater, daughter of William Westwater & Marey Noble Westwater of Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland. They had 13 children; Rebecca, Marey Noble, Helen Dickson, George, William Westwater, David D, Agnes Westwater, James Westwater, Christina, Andrew, John, Mary & Lucy Coutts.

George was buried in Forty Fort Cemetery.

On June 22, 1972 Hurricane Agnes storm moved into Pennsylvania, where 48 deaths were reported and the damage was estimated at $2.1 billion. President Nixon declared Pennsylvania a disaster area. Agnes poured as much as 18 inches of rain in two days. Flooding and fires destroyed 68,000 homes and 3,000 businesses, leaving 220,000 Pennsylvanians homeless. Graves were washed out in the hurricane. Caskets reburied in the Memorial Park, Dallas, PA. Hurricane Agnes still ranks as PA.'s worst disaster.
