Robert Gilmer Hanford, born October 30, 1796, probably in Ulster County, New York, the son of Dorothy Drake and Lewis Hanford; named for his father's close friend, Robert Gilmer. On September 18, 1830, he married Mary Soper, daughter of Eleanor Dickerson and William Soper. In 1826 he was injured while building two new houses in the Seventh Ward in New York City; he was disabled for eighteen months. Later his business interests changed as travel apparently was involved. On May 25, 1839, while returning from a visit with his sister, Julia Ann Hanford Soper in Sistersville, WV, he died on a steamboat on the Ohio River near Pittsburgh, PA; he was buried there. His estate of $6000 was administered by his wife Mary on July 1, 1839. He had apparently been contemplating purchasing property in Sistersville. Robert kept a hardware store at 588 Water Street between Montgomery and Clinton Streets in NYC. He lived on Cherry Street. After his death, his business was moved to the corner of Rutger and Cherry Streets by his sons, Albert and Cyrus Hanford. When Cyrus died in 1851, Robert G. Hanford, Jr. was taken into partnership in the business by his brother Albert. Albert afterwards went west. Robert and Mary had five children: Albert Gllatin Hanford; Eleanor Hanford; Cyrus Hanford; Robert Hanford; and Robert G. Hanford II.
