Helen A. Brodecker, 100, passed away Friday, August 28, 2009 at Aldersgate Village.

She was born Jan. 13, 1909 in the farming community of Catherine, KS. The community was founded in the 1870's by her great grandfather, Jacob Schmidt and a small group of Volga Germans who emigrated from Russia.

She married Melvin L. Brodecker in Topeka on April 15, 1929. He preceded her in death on January 27, 1952.

Helen worked as a sales person for Crosby Dept. Store for 15 years, later she was a house mother for the Zeta Alpha Sorority at Washburn University and worked at the Washburn Catholic Center. She was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She loved flowers, feeding the birds and anything having to do with Baby Jesus. She looked forward to achieving the age 100, at which she succeeded.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol (Jim) Hagen, Topeka; son, Allen "Buss" (Sue) Brodecker, Osage Beach, MO; brothers, James Schmidt and Harold Schmidt; sisters, Anita Stang and Dora Lee Robertson; seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons, Melvin Brodecker and Larry Brodecker; four sisters and a brother.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept 1, 2009 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd, Topeka, KS 66614. Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice or Alzheimer's Assoc. sent in care of the funeral home.
