Passing of Mrs. Joseph Smith.
It was in Johnson county, Indiana, that Nancy J. Tracy was born, and October 18, 1838, was the day of her birth. It was 11:30 a.m. February 1, 1912, and at her home in Ravenna Missouri, that she passed peacefully away. She was the wife of Joseph Smith to whom she was married on her own birthday 1855, and in the same county where her childhood and womanhood days were spent. It was on his birthday that death dissolved the union and left him to complete the journey alone. A journey of nearly 57 years thus far they have shared together and in its going they have come to joy and happiness mingle with care gracefully borne. She, with her husband and oldest son, came to Missouri in March, 1857, and have for these 55 years past been a real part of the life of Mercer county.

To them were born twelve children: Milton L. who died in 1861; Mrs. Florence Scannell of Elk City, Oklahoma; Lewis N. of New Kirk, Oklahoma; Rebecca J. Johnson of Elk City, Oklahoma; Mrs. Mary J. Weaver and John W. of near Ravenna; James E. of Savery, Kansas; Jermima (sic) B. who died Sept. 1883; Dr. Joseph E. of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; Mrs. Ida Zully and Dr. Norris A. of Ravenna, and Nancy Agnes who died June 18, 1904.

The most outstanding fact of this life is that she was converted in 1849, 63 years ago, united with the Methodist Episcopal church and lived the consistent Christian life. This entered in to make her the devoted wife, the tender, self-sacrificing mother that she was. A face that hid away care and beamed in love to others. Her life cannot be written here. It is written in the lives of her children and friends. She gave her life to others.

The funeral services were conducted from her home in Ravenna at 2 o'clock Saturday, February 3rd, by S.C. Foster, of Princeton. Her own pastor, M.H. Kauffman of Mercer, who would have shared in the services, could not reach the home that day on account of the storm. The burial was in the beautiful cemetery near by. - S. C. F.
