In 1858, Joseph removed to Mercer County, Missouri, settling on four hundred acres of land in Ravanna Township. He married Nancy Tracy in 1865 at Indianapolis and they had twelve children, six sons and six daughters. Joseph was very active in the public affairs of Ravanna and earned the confidence of the townspeople. A Republican, he served two terms as Justice of the Peace and was a long time, active member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church.
When the 1880 United States Federal Census was taken, Joseph and Nancy were residing on their farm in Ravanna Township. They had ten children living in the home, Florence; Lewis; Rebecca; Mary; John; James; Jemima; Joseph; Ida; and Norris. Sons Lewis, John, and James worked for their father as farm laborers.
By 1890 Joseph and Nancy, were probably retired, as no employment was listed on the Census. Their youngest child, Nancy Agnes, was living in the home, as was a boarder, Ira T. Blakely. Ira was single and employed as a merchant.
In 1920, Jospeh, a widower, was a retired farmer. His daughter, Rebecca, lived in the home at Ravanna. She was a widow and her married surname was Johnson. Joseph's other daughter, Ida Tully and her husband, resided nearby.
Joseph died at 3:30 p.m. April 19, 1922, while at the home of his daughter, Ida.
