John Wesley Smith, a son of Joseph Isaac Smith and Nancy Jane Tracy, was born and resided in Ravanna, Mercer County, Missouri his entire life. In 1898, he married Sarah Jane Hunter, a daughter of James Hunter and Agnes Laird.

When the 1900 Federal Census was taken, John and Sarah were living in Ravanna. They had a four month old son named Laird. John was a farmer and Sarah kept house.

By 1920, James and Sarah owned their farm in Ravanna. They had three children living at home, Laird, Nancy, and Anna. James and Laird, who was nineteen, were both farmers.

In 1930, James and Sarah were still residing on the farm they owned. Their unmarried daughter, Nancy lived in the home and was a teacher in the Ravanna public school system. James was still a farmer and Sarah, a homemaker.

According to John's death certificate, he died of complications from diabetes mellitus at the age of sixty-three.
