Early Monday morning the love of my life, my friend and confidante, Reed, passed away due to a massive stroke.

Reed was delivered by mid-wife in Holden, Utah on April 1, 1927.

His mother's doctor was suspicious of the April Fool's Day call, and refused to make the trip from Fillmore to Holden. Since that day Reed has been a prankster and he spent his lively boyhood in and around his dad's watermelon patch.

Reed missed his own high school graduation, enlisting in the U.S. Navy at age 17 to serve in World War II, where he was assigned to the USS Pittsburgh and then the USS Oregon City. After the War, Reed served an LDS mission in the Northwestern States Mission. The testimony he gained of his Savior carried him throughout his life. He served in various church callings, including bishop of the Mount Olympus Seventh Ward.

He graduated from the University of Utah and received his Master's Degree from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. Reed started his career as a runner for Walker Bank (later First Interstate) in Salt Lake City. Over time he rose to the position of Vice President and Manager of both the Sugar House and Downtown Branches. He established and managed the St. George branch of the bank before retiring. He was actively involved in the Sugar House Rotary and served as president for a time.

In November 1947, Reed married Dolores (Dee) Dunford in the Salt Lake Temple. They had two children before Dee's untimely passing due to cancer. Reed and I (Patricia) were married November 1970 in the Salt Lake Temple. I brought two children to our marriage. We soon had our fifth child, Danny, who died in 1979 at the age of seven. Reed loved life and all the evidences of God's handiwork manifest in this world. He was a gifted poet and conversationalist. He enjoyed history and people. Reed's greatest joy was spending time with his family. We lived a wonderful life together.

Reed is also survived by our children Tracy (John) Melville, Susan (Terry) Wood, Chris (Jennifer Richards) Wood, and David (Nancy Reese) Wood, 15 grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, sister Joyce (Daryl) Talbot, and his 101 year-old mother-in-law, June Wilson. He was preceded in death by Dee, Danny, his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2009 in the LDS Chapel, 259 North Mall Drive, St. George, from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the LDS Chapel, 3640 East Millstream Lane (3510 South), East Millcreek. Friends may visit with the family prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
