William was born in County Donegal, Ireland, about 1790 (according to the ship's passenger list). William and Sarah were married and had most of their children in County Donegal, Ireland. John, Martha, Mary, Margaret, Sarah, Hannah, William, and James were christened in the Townland of Leat, in the Parish of Clondavaddog, in the Barony of Kilmacrenan. All but John immigrated on the Ship Asia to Philadelphia, landing on July 13, 1830. Also on the ship were Sarah's brother, father-in-law, sister, her husband, and their 8 children.

The McCollums moved to Sugarcreek, in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Daughters Nancy and Lydia were born there. He was a farmer. William applied for citizenship on September 18, 1830. The family is listed on the 1840 Census for Franklin Township. The extended family continued to live in the Armstrong County area for generations.
