Young Wife and Mother Passed Away Last Week at Her Home South of Metamora--Funeral Saturday
Death is always sad, but is doubly so when it takes a young mother. Mrs. Clifford Smith, wife of one of our well known farmers, living on the old home farm of his father, W. H. Smith, 3 miles north and 1½ miles east of Washington, died at 6 o'clock Thursday morning, Nov. 16, 1911. Mrs. Smith had been complaining for some six months, but about two weeks ago she was attacked by pneumonia, and owing to her weakened condition, was unable to overcome the malady. Her death had been expected for a number of days but loving hands did all they could until the end came.
Lena [Tina] Gronewald [Gronewold] was born 26 years ago. She was a daughter of Mrs. Bonnie Gronewald and had lived all her live [sic] in this community. She was married to Clifford Smith five years ago, on Christmas day. Two children were born from this union, a little son nearly 4 years of age and a daughter nearly 2. These, together with her husband, her mother and brothers, and many other relatives, are left to mourn her untimely death. Mrs. Smith was of a bright, sunny disposition and was a most devoted wife and mother--Washington Post.
The funeral of Mrs. Smith was held Saturday afternoon at 1:30. The remains were taken to the Christian church in Washington where the final services were conducted by Rev. E. H. Reed and Rev. P. B. Holtgreve. A large gathering of friends of the deceased and family were present at the services.
