Paul Edward Ward of Rio, known as "PW" to many, died Saturday, January 23, 1999 after a long illness. Born on October 4, 1953 in Bogalusa, the son of Mrs. Reda Mae Ward and the late H. J. Ward of Rio, Paul graduated from Bogalusa High School in 1971 and worked alternately in the building and maritime trades. In the latter, he held a Captain's license for the operation of small, ocean-going vessels and rivercraft, and also operated a crew boat for ocean oil field personnel during the latter years of his career. He saw much of the world and held a particular fascination for the Far East, the Middle East, and India.

While in India in 1993, he contracted hepatitis which, added to improper medication taken over a period of time for a misdiagnosed eye ailment, led to a seriously debilitating lung disorder on top of a deteriorating liver disorder and other associated afflictions. Coincident with his visit to India in 1993, he had been operating a crewboat for post-Desert Storm operations off the coast of Kuwait after the first Gulf War. His later ailments suggest similarities with afflictions suffered by many Desert Storm veterans.

During his last five years, his health suffered a steady decline, reducing him to constant bed care, provided by his loving mother, at the end. He bore his affliction with stoic determination, did not become absorbed in self-pity, and cheated the "Grim Reaper" more than a few times before his ascent into eternity.

He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Reda Mae Ward or Rio, a brother, William H. Ward of Midland, Georgia; a sister, Mrs. Anna Lynn Fredericks of Goldonna, Louisiana (her son Rory and daughter Taylor); a niece Cherie Bergeron Warren of Franklinton; and nephew Chad Bergeron of Virginia (daughter and son of Cyrus Bergeron and the late Gayle Ward Bergeron of Rio).

Visitation was held Sunday, 24 January 1999 and the Brown-McGehee Funeral Home and continued Monday, January 25, 1999 at 8 am until service time at 10:30 am. The Rev. David Leger officiated, with his brother William H. Ward giving a short Eulogy. Interment followed in the Palestine Baptist Church cemetery.
