Irene Ernestine (Froemming) Borchert was born on August 6, 1903 in Leaf Valley Township, Douglas County, Minnesota to Albert and Bertha (Schoeneck) Froemming. She was baptized and confirmed at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Leaf Valley. She attended country school in rural Leaf Valley through the eighth grade.

On March 30, 1922, Irene married Walter Schoeneck where they farmed in Leaf Valley Township. To this union the couple was blessed with five children. Walter died in 1934 and Irene sold the farm and moved to Garfield where she sold Watkins products. Irene married Henry Borchert on April 4, 1942. The couple lived in Alexandria where Irene did housecleaning.

Irene enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing the accordion, and playing cards especially Canasta.

Irene died Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Knute Nelson at the age of 105.

She is survived by her children, DuWayne Schoeneck in Rotonda West, FL; Arlou (John) Munro of Walnut Creek, CA; and Lorraine Schoeneck of Crystal, MN; step-son, Earl (Lavonne) Borchert of Fayetteville, North Carolina; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren; and sister, Luella Woessner of Alexandria.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Bertha; husbands, Walter Schoeneck and Henry Borchert; daughter, Merline and Elaine; brothers, Erhart, Walter, Ervin and Eddy Froemming; and sisters, Frances and Adella.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Reverend David Hinz and Reverend William Moeller officiating. Music was provided by organist, Irma Brockberg. Interment was in the Kinkead Cemetery. Casket bearers were Jeff Billstein, Ralph Martin, Ruebin Froemming, Marlon Sias, Jerome Bedman, and Frederick Miller.
