Lester M. Cook passed from death to LIFE on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the age of 94. Lester was born on May 20, 1915 in Ord, Nebraska. On June 9, 1939. He married Irene Elizabeth Shenk who proceeded him in death on November 26, 1999. Survivors include his four children Donnis (Gary) Pallaoro, Dale, Daryl and Duane Cook, and his grandson John (Kristy) Pallaoro. Additionally, he is survived by his sisters Inez, Eleanor and Velma.
During World War II as a conscientious objector he served with Civilian Public Service from Jan 11, 1944 to July 16, 1946.
Celebration of his life was held at Glennon Heights Mennonite Church, 11480 W. Virginia Ave. Lakewood, on July 12th, 2009.
Lester was a biology teacher and had an interest in the Rocky Mountain flora. Lester was a high school science teacher for many years in the La Junta/Cheraw and the Arvada area – he was an amateur photographer specializing in photographing flowers. He and Irene always had a big garden – flowers and vegetables – at their home in Arvada. For many years he also owned a farm in Cheraw even after they moved to the Denver area. Lester volunteered at Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp for many years, specializing in teaching nature classes. He was a long-time member of Glennon Heights Mennonite Church where he served in a number of leadership positions in the church. Kind, gentle, compassionate. These are words that describe Lester Marcus Cook who passed from death to LIFE on Sunday, June 21, 2009 at the age of 94. Les or "Cookie", as he was known by many friends and colleagues, lived a life devoted to serving others. He was, first and foremost, a lover of God and of his family. Les had a passion for education and this passion rubbed off on everyone his life touched. I first met Les in 1971 when he and I began to organize curriculum and activities for the Field Biology course that we were going to teach in the Jefferson County Public Schools Summer School Program. At that time Les was a biology teacher at Arvada High School and I taught life science at Everitt Junior High School. During the summers that Les and I taught Field Biology my life was enriched by just being around him and watching him "work his magic" with the students. He took education to a higher level and the students who participated in this 10-day field program were all the better for it. Lester was a lifetime member of CBTA and was Secretary of the organization for many years.
He was the Colorado recipient of the OBTA award in 1980. Les worked for many years at the Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp on the west side of Pikes Peak. Even after his retirement from the Jeffco Schools Les remained very active in CBTA and in programs such as the Metro Denver Regional Science Fair and Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) – a program designed to help the homeless. The education community has lost a great friend. We will miss you, Les!
