Hattie Elva Smith Barnett was the daughter of Jasper and Ada Chapman Smith. She married Lawrence A. Barnett in 1905 in Travis County, Texas. They had six children together: Ethel, Coy Owen, Charles Preston, Louella, Lawrence A. and Ada Belle. Lawrence died in 1918 leaving Hattie with six young children to raise. Ada Belle, the youngest, was only one year old. In 1932, Hattie married her brother-in-law Edgar Eugene Barnett. Sadly, Hattie became a Gold Star Mother when her son Lawrence was killed in action in France during WWII.
