He joined the Navy in April 14, 1944 and servied as Seaman First Class , U.S.N.- (SA) was Honoraly Discharged from the U.S. Navel Barracks, Naval Supply Depot, Clearfield, Utah and the Naval Service of the United States on June 15, 1946. He recieved the American Theatre and World War 11 Victory Ribbon, and Honorable Service Button, issued at U.S. Naval Barracks, Naval Supply Depot, Clearfield. Utah.
November 17, 1963, he finally settled down and married Ruby Opal Bogoan, in Roswell, New Mexico. She had two children, a son and a daughter, and they lived in Haysville, Kansas. In later years they divorced. Shortly after that he moved to Barnhart, Missouri. Gene, with his brother Glenn, bought a nice home in Barnhart, MO. Glenn passed away April 04, 1991.
Gene passed away Sunday, September 10, 2000 at Clay Nursing Home in St. Charles, MO. He had Parkinsons Disease and had fallen and broke his hip.
Survivors include: three sister's, Hazel Bedell of Dodge City, KS.; Mildred Eldringhoff of St. Louis, MO.; Juanita Dean of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and nephews and nieces.
Preceded in death: his parents, and a sister, Esther Belle Smith, and a brother, Glenn Mallory Langley. Cremation has taken place and the ashes were buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cememtery, St. Louis, Missouri.
