Funeral service were held Saturday afternoon in the Hill Funeral Home for Mrs. Nettie Mae Garland, who died in her home last Thursday, January 21, 1954.
The Rev. Webster Hob officiated and pallbearers were Otis Goldsberry, Leslie Shepard, Hill, Charles Thompson, Edward Thompson, and Frank Gunderson. Mrs. Bernard Atherton was soloist at the services.
Mrs. Garland was born October 28, 1870, one of 11 children of Henry and Ruth (Foote) Skelton at Cabery in Ford County, Illinois. She was united in marriage with Edward Garland on October 6, 1890, and they resided on a farm near Baker until 1918 when they moved to Earlville. Her husband died August 5, 1925.
The deceased was preceded in death by three sisters and three grandchildren. Survivors include three daughters; Mrs. Mary Hughes and Mrs. Joseph Thompson of Earlville, Mrs. Byron Gunderson of Leland; one son Charles Garland of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. Maggie Dickerson of Nevada, Missouri, Mrs. Kate Firestone of Montebello, California and Mrs. Edith Ferner of Los Angeles; four brothers, Will Skelton of Vesta Minnesota, James Skelton of Kankakee, Illinois, Alvie Harold Skelton of California, and Frederick Skelton of Visalia, California; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Among those from out of town at the services were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Garland and Owen of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hughes of Springfield, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Auchstetter of Mendota, Charles Thompson of Aurora and Mrs. Alice of Peoria. Many also attended from nearby towns.
