Louis Frederick Skelton was born March 9, 1879, Cabery, Ford County, Illinois, the son of Henry Skelton and Ruth Foote Skelton. He was married to his first wife Josephine Essington on December 26, 1905. They had two boys: Lewis, born September 11, 1906 and Albert, born September 8, 1908, and a daughter, Irene Josephine, born March 30, 1910. Never fully recovering from childbirth, Josephine died. Fearing that he wouldn't be able to care for the baby girl, Fred allowed her to be adopted by a cousin of Josephine's, Mrs. Peter Beck. Fred then Married Ida Roggenburg, daughter of Joseph Roggenburg. They were married on April 28, 1914 in Paxton, Illinois. They had seven more children together: Irene, born January 14, 1915; Dorothy born August 10, 1917; Delbert, born July 12, 1920; Mary, born July 11, 1924; Fred, born May 17, 1927;Edith, born March 21, 1930' and Franklin born March 16, 1933. Fred was a famer and farmed many areas of Illinois. He also did some carpentry work and was in a threshing partnership with his brother, James. He was an outstanding fiddle player and enjoyed playing for neighborhood dances and gatherings. He and his son Albert moved to California in 1946 and he continued playing his fiddle uptown in front of the furniture store. He farmed in Planada, California until his death on December 24, 1958. He is interred in Plainsburg Cemetery in Merced County, California.
