DEATH IN AUTO ACCIDENT
H. M. Schmidt, of Battle Creek, Ia., Killed
Battle Creek Ia. – H. M. Schmidt, a well-known businessman of this place, was instantly killed, his wife probably fatally injured and Mrs. J. E. Spotts, a relative, bruised when an auto Mr. Schmidt was driving turned turtle northwest of town.
The Schmidt family had received a telephone call about a half hour previous to the accident, notifying them of the very serious condition of their son’s wife, Mrs. Henning Schmidt Jr., living on a farm south of town. After receiving the call the family made hasty preparations to go to the bedside of their daughter-in-law. Mr. Schmidt drove his car a mile out of the road to get Mrs. J. E. Spotts, mother of Mrs. Henning Schmidt Jr, and in coming back attempted to make a turn in the road. The car somersaulted, killing Mr. Schmidt instantly, crushing his head into a pulp. His wife was unconscious at the time she was picked up and at present it is not known how badly she is injured.
Mr. Schmidt was a prominent factor in the business interest of Battle Creek, being vie president of the Farmers Savings bank, a large landowner and a prominent Mason.
